Expert summary

Chess is a recreational and competitive game played between two. The present form of the game is believed to have evolved in Southern Europe during the latter half of the 15th century. The older form from which it developed must have been of Indian or Persian origin. Today, chess has become one of the most popular games, played by millions of players all around the world. They play it in clubs, online, or in tournaments. Chess is played on a square chequered chessboard with 64 squares, arranged in an eight-by-eight square. At the start of the game each player will control 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
